A Day in the Life of a CTR Rescue Technician

February 2, 2026

A day as a Rescue Technician with Capital Technical Rescue(CTR) is a mix of technical skill, safety leadership, and hands‑on work in dynamic industrial environments. Our teams provide professional standby rescue coverage for confined space entry, high‑angle operations, and specialized industrial work—ensuring crews can complete their jobs safely with a trained rescue team ready at all times.

Starting the Day: Prep, Briefings & Travel

Each shift begins with an assignment from CTR HQ. You bump test the atmospheric monitors at the shop and then load the rescue truck with the required gear for the day—tripods, ventilation equipment, atmospheric monitors, rope kits, PPE, and your CTR‑issued iPad. Before leaving, you complete a walk‑around of the rescue vehicle to ensure it’s in safe operating condition.

Driving safely to the job site is part of the role, and our rescuers operate CTR vehicles professionally and responsibly at all times.

Arriving Onsite: Pre‑Planning & Coordination

Upon arrival, you check in with the client or site safety lead. They explain the day’s work, hazards, and entry plan. You then:

  • Perform a job hazard assessment
  • Build a rescue pre‑plan on the iPad
  • Identify entry points, hazards, and rescue paths
  • Coordinate with attendants and entrants
  • Verify the site’s required PPE and safety protocols

This step ensures you have a complete understanding of the environment before standby operations begin.

Setting Up Rescue & Safety Systems

With the pre‑plan complete, you prepare the site for safe entry. This includes:

  • "Walk down" & take part in LOTO
  • Utilizing atmospheric monitors
  • Recording baseline readings
  • Installing ventilation equipment
  • Setting up tripods, davit systems, or rope systems
  • Preparing retrieval or access equipment
  • Ensuring all gear is inspected and rescue‑ready

Each setup is tailored to the site’s layout and the type of confined space or elevated work being performed.

Throughout the Shift: Monitoring, Awareness & Documentation

Once entry begins, your primary role is rescue readiness—staying alert, observant, and prepared to respond immediately.

You will:

  • Monitor atmospheric conditions continuously
  • Log gas readings at required intervals
  • Track entrant status and maintain communications
  • Watch for changing hazards
  • Maintain full PPE and readiness
  • Document all activities in CTR’s tablet‑based system

Strong computer skills matter here. Rescuers routinely use scanners and scanner apps, email attachments, digital forms, and take online client training modules. A good rescuer is as comfortable with documentation and compliance as with rigging or rope systems.

End of Day: Breakdown & Reporting

When the work is complete, you:

  • Perform equipment inspections
  • Break down ventilation and rescue systems
  • Complete digital reports
  • Upload scanned job documentation
  • Note any vehicle or equipment needs
  • Return gear to operational readiness

Professionalism and attention to detail are key—even at the end of a long shift.
